Evolve or Die

Written by Cedric Solidon on May 20th, 2009 at 1:27 PM

Since the internet has become mainstream over the past few years, it’s easy enough to assume that a lot of businesses will take advantage of this new medium. Unfortunately, a good number of them still don’t appreciate the capacity of the net as a new revenue stream.

Case in point, newspapers and magazines. Seth Godin predicts that, “there will be no significant newspapers printed on newsprint in the US by 2012.” In the Philippines, I’m sure that that will also be the case eventually with more wifi hotspots and internet-ready phones cropping up. It’s great that some newspapers and magazines are already starting to make the shift from paper to digital. But there are those who prefer not to innovate and stick to their tried and tested medium.

What will these companies do when all their competitors have already shifted to digital and no longer find advertisers for their glossies or newsprints? What will they do if they can’t find other means of monetizing their sites? It’s a good bet that they’ll eventually fold up.

If you’re a magazine or newspaper publisher, how will you handle the shift that’s happening right before you? Will you evolve or will you choose to let your company die?

Yep, a new post. My main concern on this post are those who refuse to evolve and simply say, ‘I don’t know shit about technology.’ Fine if they don’t want to learn new things, but it will surely cost them a lot of money.

Re your post: Advertising on the these websites will remain but a lot of these sites will also be asking for paid subscriptions. Unless they find other products to sell along with their content. What’s fantastic is that your guess is as good as mine at this point. It’s interesting to see how things will eventually turn out.
