Why Now is the Best Time to be a Freelancer or to Start a Business
Written by Cedric Solidon on October 16th, 2008 at 5:22 PMI haven’t been reading the papers lately because I know the headlines are still the same. Presidential debates and the usual political scandals aside, the news are mostly about the economic depression that the world is plunging into.
Spirits were high and stocks recovered last Monday because of the bank rescue packages only to plummet again because of the continuing fears of recession. And although we will all be affected by recession in one way or another, it is not the time for fear to hold you down. It’s rather a challenge for you to be more creative in finding ways to earn income. Recession or not, you still have, “to eat and move around,” as Brian Clark puts it.
The truth of the matter is that your day job won’t save you when recession actually occurs. Rather, you will be one of its first casualties. So it’s time that you explore doing freelance work on the side, or start your own business. There’s an opportunity waiting to be discovered in these tough times.
Freelancers can benefit from this because they are generally much more affordable to hire than maintaining a regular office staff. And with consumers holding on to their hard-earned cash, can you put up a business that offers great value for their money?
Think about it, Eddie Van Halen shook the world with his guitar solo called ‘Eruption’ at about the time when music critics declared guitar rock as dead. And man, did he influence a new generation of guitar-based rock bands and proved the critics wrong.
There’s an opportunity knocking at your door. Are you ready to answer it?

I’ve often said, Cedric, that successful freelancers don’t wait for opportunity to knock – they go out on their own, find opportunity, and wrestle him to the ground until he relents.
That being said, you’re right. There is no better time to start a small business than right now. It’s what makes the economy run, and there are plenty of opportunities.
This is especially true for the freelancer. I have clients all over the world, and my business has barely noticed this little bump in the road. My dear friend who works in the housing appraisal industry isn’t so fortunate, because his business is tied to a local market.

Thanks for dropping by, Bob. Well said on the bit about freelancers. It takes a lot of guts to get out on your own. And that’s what’s make freelancing great – it’s an adventure.
I’m sorry for your friend. It’s also time to diversify our businesses and our client base so that when one flunks, we don’t lose all our source of income.
