The Challenges of Working at Home and What to Do About Them
Written by Cedric Solidon on October 7th, 2008 at 2:17 PMFor some people, working at home is better than working in an office because of a number of reasons. For one, you save a lot of time and money by not commuting to work. And if you want to be your own boss, working at home is the best way to go about it. Then there’s having a flexible schedule. If you think that you work better at night, then you can move your schedule to a better time than being stuck in a 9-5 routine.
But it’s not all fun and games when you work at home. This kind of set up has its own unique challenges that you wouldn’t normally encounter in an office setting. I’ll show some of them to you along with some tips of how you can deal with them.
Nobody’s Watching Over You
I mentioned earlier that working at home is great if you want to be your own boss. It’s great to have no one to tell you what to do, but that can also be a problem. When you start slacking off, putting off plans and becoming indecisive, you’re in big trouble. So start putting in a little discipline in yourself. Know what needs to be done and how much time you need to devote for each task. Which leads us to the next tip: scheduling.
Have a Schedule
Having flexible working hours is one of the perks of working at home. But if you really want to get things done, you should have a schedule of what you need to do. Having a schedule helps you with a number of things: it lets you know what needs to be done for the day, week and the month, it gives you an idea if you’re putting in too much or too little time on a particular aspect of your work and finally, it prevents you from missing out on schedules – which is important when you’re dealing with clients.
On Errands
One of the things that you cannot avoid when you’re working at home are the people who will ask you to run an errand or do a house chore. After all, you are working at home and you have a flexible schedule, right? But it can really be distracting if you’re trying to focus on a certain project or trying to beat a deadline. Talking to your housemates usually does the trick.
Tell the people around you that although you are at home, you are actually working and you need to focus on that. Show them your schedule if you can and ask them to be a bit more considerate. Communication is key to this kind of problem.
So have you encountered these problems when you work at home? Or are there any other problems that you were faced with? Share your thoughts in the comment box below.
